Easter Bouquets, my 1st cupcake extravaganza!

I can't even begin to express my excitement over this 'extreme' over-the-top first attempt at a cupcake bouquet. I began with my first attempt at homemade Royal icing, which is quite easy (recipe attached soon), but how do you know when it's thick enough to keep it's shape and also be edible? It took several attempts to get a decent looking rose and by the last rose I still wasn't convinced they were as they should be, but no cake decorating classes here ladies!

I included so many elements into this bouquet, my biggest regret was using regular size cupcakes instead of minis. The icing, hard and heavy, was difficult to keep adhered to the cakes which I attached to the styrofoam in the basket prior to attaching the flowers after. I had seen a picture of a sugar butterfly, so I used the technique to create a Royal icing butterfly. I would definitely change the colors or just leave the holes in the white empty next time. The cake ball egg pops, were easy enough due to all my previous experiements involving turning cake or cheesecake or oreos into balls. The icing was a little too thick though. Throw in a few pretzel rods covered in purple flowery things and a robin's egg nest made just like a hay stack, and you have a fully loaded bouquet of cupcake flowers with giant eggs, butterfly and birds nest. It lasted maybe an hour before it all started falling off. ha!
